UCLA Unveils Groundbreaking Comp Lit Course Developed by AI
In winter 2025, UCLA will introduce a comparative literature course that utilizes a textbook, homework assignments, and teaching assistant resources developed by artificial intelligence. This innovative class will focus on literature spanning from the Middle Ages to the 17th century, with materials created through Kudu, a cutting-edge textbook platform founded by Alexander Kusenko, a physics and astronomy professor at UCLA. The university highlights that this will be the first instance of AI-generated materials being used in its humanities division.
To create the course materials, Professor Zrinka Stahuljak supplied Kudu with her teaching notes, PowerPoint presentations, and YouTube videos from previous iterations of the course. While the typical time frame for developing such materials is three to four months, UCLA ensures that the professors will invest no more than 20 hours, with Kudu compensating them for their time.
Stahuljak believes that this AI-driven approach will allow herself and her teaching assistants to engage more effectively with students, ensuring a more consistent delivery of course content. Furthermore, students will have the capability to ask Kudu questions about the material, receiving answers sourced exclusively from the assigned materials rather than from the broader internet.
