OpenAI’s GPT-5: A Closer Look at its Unmet Expectations
OpenAI is reportedly facing challenges in the development of its next major model, GPT-5, also known as Orion. According to a recent report from The Wall Street Journal, the project is behind schedule and the results produced so far do not justify the significant costs incurred. This concern aligns with an earlier report from The Information, which suggested that OpenAI is shifting strategies as the expected advancements from GPT-5 may not match those of its predecessors.
The Wall Street Journal highlights that OpenAI has been working on GPT-5 for 18 months and has conducted at least two major training runs. However, the initial run progressed slower than anticipated, indicating that subsequent training phases could be both time-intensive and expensive. While GPT-5 is thought to outperform earlier models, its improvements haven’t reached a level that would warrant the ongoing operational costs.
In an effort to enhance the model, OpenAI has expanded its data-gathering methods beyond public data and licensing agreements. The company has onboarded personnel to generate fresh data by coding or solving mathematical problems. Additionally, it is utilizing synthetic data produced by another of its models.
OpenAI has not commented on these developments recently, and it had previously announced there would be no release of a model called Orion within the current year.
