AMD Launches Cutting-Edge Chips for Laptops, Desktops, and Gaming Handhelds at CES 2025

At CES 2025 in Las Vegas, AMD made a significant impact by unveiling a range of new processors aimed at devices from desktops to gaming handhelds. The company is entering this year’s CES on a strong note, having captured a 28.7% share of the desktop CPU market in Q3 2024, which is an increase of 9.6 percentage points year-over-year. AMD also reported holding a 22.3% share in the mobile chip market during the same period.
AMD’s strategy for 2025 is ambitious and includes the introduction of the Ryzen 9 9950X3D, designed for gamers and content creators. This processor boasts 16 cores based on the Zen 5 architecture and can reach clock speeds up to 5.7GHz. According to AMD’s benchmarks, the 9950X3D performs 8% faster in popular games compared to its predecessor, the 7950X3D. Additionally, AMD plans to launch the Ryzen 9 9900X3D, which has 12 cores and a maximum clock speed of 5.5GHz, in Q1 2025.
In a push towards more portable computing, AMD introduced the “Fire Range” series targeting midrange laptops and ultraportables. This lineup, expected to launch in the first half of 2025, includes models like the Ryzen 9 9850HX and 9955HX, featuring 12 to 16 cores and clock speeds between 5.2GHz and 5.4GHz, while consuming significantly less power than the flagship 9950X3D.
AMD is also focusing on artificial intelligence with the new Ryzen AI 300 and Ryzen AI Max series, intended for AI-accelerated Windows 11 PCs. These processors incorporate a dedicated neural processing unit (NPU) for enhanced AI capabilities and are scheduled to arrive in Q1/Q2 2025. Meanwhile, the Ryzen 200 series targets budget-conscious consumers, offering a balanced performance with several new models set to launch in Q2 2025.
Expanding further into handheld gaming, AMD announced new processors in its Ryzen Z2 series, meant for gaming-focused lightweight devices. The Z2 Go and Z2 Extreme models will be available in Q1 2025, further solidifying AMD’s presence in the handheld gaming market.
Lastly, AMD introduced the Radeon RX 9070 XT and Radeon RX 9070 graphics cards, based on the new RDNA 4 architecture that promises improved ray tracing performance, media encoding, and AI acceleration. These cards are expected to become available from various manufacturers starting in Q1 2025.
AMD’s announcements at CES 2025 showcase its commitment to advancing technology in both gaming and AI-driven devices, setting a robust agenda for the upcoming year.
