Firmus Earns Accolades for Innovative AI Data Centre Design in Singapore

Singapore-based Firmus Technologies has been awarded the Asia Pacific Data Centre Project of the Year for its innovative AI Factory facility. This design emphasizes advanced infrastructure along with energy efficiency, which is crucial as the demand for AI computing rises.

The AI Factory is part of Firmus’s initiative to enhance existing ST Telemedia Global Data Centres (STT GDC) into GPU-driven platforms. These revamped data centres integrate cutting-edge hardware and efficient cooling systems, boosting both enterprise and research capacity while surpassing traditional energy performance standards.

With the ever-increasing power demands of artificial intelligence, energy efficiency has become a significant concern. For nearly a decade, Firmus has developed its AI Factory platform, which features advanced immersion cooling technology alongside reliable design, construction, and operational services. The benefits of this platform include:

• Energy efficiency: 45% more FLOP per utility picoJoule compared to standard data centres.
• Cost-effectiveness: Up to 30% lower total cost of ownership (TCO) than conventional cooling platforms.
• Scalability and sustainability: Designed to support high-density AI workloads while minimizing environmental impact.
• Global expertise: Established success in building and operating immersion-cooled data centres in both Singapore and Australia.

The deployment of the AI Factory in Singapore underscores the potential for innovative data centre designs to meet the energy needs of AI technologies. This project aligns with Singapore’s National AI Strategy 2.0, which aims for sustainable AI growth and data centre innovation.

Tim Rosenfield, co-CEO of Firmus Technologies, articulated the goal behind the project: balancing AI development with sustainability. He stated, “By rethinking data centre design, we have created a platform that supports the growth of AI while promoting environmental sustainability. If we can achieve this in Singapore, where space is limited and the climate presents challenges, it’s possible anywhere.”

Firmus has also refreshed its leadership, appointing Dr. Daniel Kearney as chief technology officer. Formerly AWS’s Head of Technology for the ASEAN Enterprise segment, Kearney is now spearheading the engineering team at Firmus. • Power efficiency benchmarks: Firmus is the first to provide comprehensive power consumption data along with performance results for the MLPerf Training benchmark.
• Policy contributions: Insights from Tim Rosenfield have influenced the Tony Blair Institute for Global Change’s energy management strategies for the AI sector.
• Industry discussions: At ATxSG24, Firmus’s chairman participated in a panel discussing sustainability in AI workloads alongside organizations like NVIDIA and the World Bank.
• Hypercube expansion: Installation of the first Sustainable AI Factories, referred to as HyperCubes, across various regions.
• Engagement at NVIDIA GTC 2024: The company contributed to two panels focused on sustainable AI infrastructure in collaboration with partners such as NVIDIA and Deloitte.
