A recent incident outside the Trump International Hotel in Las Vegas has drawn attention to the intersection of technology and violence. A Tesla Cybertruck exploded, resulting in one fatality and injuring seven others. According to authorities, the truck carried an alarming combination of gasoline canisters, camp fuel, and large firework mortars, which were linked to a system orchestrated by the driver, 37-year-old Matthew Livelsberger. Investigators concluded that the explosion was the result of a meticulously planned attack.
Livelsberger, an active-duty US Army soldier, had saved a “possible manifesto” on his phone that detailed his intentions, alongside communication with a podcaster about his plans. Surveillance footage indicated he had prepared for the explosion by pouring fuel into the truck shortly before driving to the hotel. Despite these preparations, Livelsberger had no previous criminal history and was not under any surveillance when the incident occurred.

Sheriff Kevin McMahill commented on this development, noting it might be the first instance where ChatGPT was used to assist in constructing a weapon.
The tragic event concluded with Livelsberger taking his own life at the scene, with his identity verified through DNA and tattoos, due to severe burns from the explosion. The explosion was described as a deflagration—less destructive than a high-explosive detonation—prompting speculation about how it was triggered, which might have involved fuel vapors igniting.
OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, responded to the incident by expressing their sorrow and reiterated their commitment to responsible AI use, stating that their models are programmed to refuse harmful instructions. They confirmed they were cooperating with law enforcement to investigate the case.
