CoreWeave Expands Global Reach: Launches First International Data Centers in the UK
CoreWeave, a cloud computing provider specializing in AI resources, has officially launched its first two international data centers in the United Kingdom. This marks the company’s expansion beyond its domestic U.S. market, following the opening of its European headquarters in London last May. At that time, CoreWeave achieved a $19 billion valuation after a successful $1.1 billion fundraising round and announced plans for a £1 billion ($1.25 billion) investment in the U.K. market.
Coinciding with CoreWeave’s announcement, the U.K. government revealed a five-year investment plan aimed at enhancing AI computing capacity, supported by private sector infrastructure. Rachel Reeves, U.K. Chancellor of the Exchequer, emphasized the importance of this investment as a sign of confidence in the digital technology sector.
The first of CoreWeave’s U.K. data centers began operating discreetly in Crawley last October, with a second center in London Docklands commencing operations in December. Both facilities are equipped with Nvidia’s Hopper GPUs, specifically designed for AI workloads.
Initially founded in 2017 with a focus on crypto mining, CoreWeave pivoted its operations to meet the growing demand for AI computing power. The company has expanded its number of data centers to 28 by the end of 2024 and plans to add 10 more in 2025, with three located in Europe including previously announced sites in Norway, Sweden, and Spain.
