Google’s Controversial Strategy: Paying AI Employees to Sit Idle Instead of Joining Competitors

Google is reportedly resorting to a controversial tactic to retain its top AI talent amid fierce competition from companies like OpenAI. According to Business Insider, Google’s AI division, DeepMind, has implemented strict noncompete agreements for some employees in the U.K. These agreements prevent them from joining rival firms for a duration of up to one year.
During this period, affected employees receive compensation, which effectively translates to an extended paid leave. However, many researchers feel disconnected from the swift advancements in AI during this time. The issue is further complicated in the U.S. where the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) outlawed most noncompete agreements in 2024; however, this does not extend to DeepMind’s operations in London.
Nando de Freitas, the VP of AI at Microsoft, highlighted the challenge faced by DeepMind employees, noting that he receives frequent messages from them expressing frustration over their noncompete clauses. Several have approached him seeking advice on how they might escape these constraints or to inquire about job opportunities, as they have been told that a move would enhance their chances of promotion.
Despite a request for comment from TechCrunch, Google clarified through Business Insider that it employs noncompete agreements selectively.
