Alibaba Cloud Expands Global AI Horizons with Innovative Models and Tools

Alibaba Cloud has recently expanded its AI offerings during its Spring Launch 2025 event, unveiling new models, platform upgrades, and Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) tools aimed at promoting global AI growth.

The digital technology arm of Alibaba is responding to the rising demand for AI-driven digital transformation, as indicated by Selina Yuan, the President of International Business at Alibaba Cloud Intelligence. She emphasized that the new updates, including Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) enhancements, are designed to help businesses innovate securely and efficiently.

Enhanced AI Models for Global Access

A pivotal aspect of the announcement is the increased availability of Alibaba Cloud’s proprietary Qwen large language model (LLM) series, which will initially be accessible through the Singapore availability zones. Among the new models presented are:

• Qwen-Max: A large-scale Mixture of Experts (MoE) model.
• QwQ-Plus: Focused on advanced reasoning for complex tasks, including mathematical problem-solving.
• QVQ-Max: Designed for visual reasoning to tackle multimodal problems.
• Qwen2.5-Omni-7b: An end-to-end multimodal model.

These models provide businesses with enhanced capabilities for developing advanced AI applications.

Significant Platform Upgrades

To support the new models, Alibaba Cloud’s Platform for AI (PAI) has undergone substantial improvements, designed to provide scalable and user-friendly generative AI solutions. Notable upgrades include:

• Distributed Inference Capabilities: This allows for the use of a multi-node architecture, addressing the high computational needs of super-large models, especially those with MoE structures.
• Prefill-decode Disaggregation Function: This enhancement optimizes performance and cuts operational costs.

The results of these upgrades were promising; for instance, using the Qwen2.5-72B model, Alibaba achieved a 92% increase in concurrency and a 91% improvement in tokens processed per second.

The PAI-Model Gallery has also been revamped, featuring nearly 300 open-source models, including those from the Qwen and Wan series. These models can be deployed with a no-code interface, making it accessible to a wider range of users.

Integration of AI into Data Management

Alibaba Cloud’s flagship relational database, PolarDB, has now integrated native AI inference through Qwen. This functionality improves efficiency by enabling machine learning directly within the database, thus reducing latency for tasks like developing conversational agents and conducting semantic searches.

The company’s AnalyticDB also integrates seamlessly with Alibaba Cloud’s generative AI development platform, Model Studio, serving as a vector database for Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) solutions. This connection allows organizations to leverage their proprietary data while creating context-aware applications.

New SaaS Tools for Industry Transformation

In addition to infrastructure and platform enhancements, Alibaba introduced two new SaaS AI tools:

• AI Doc: An intelligent document processing tool that efficiently parses various documents and generates tailored reports, which can be integrated with sustainability solutions.
• Smart Studio: This tool supports content creation across multiple formats, enhancing outputs for industries such as e-commerce, gaming, and entertainment with capabilities like virtual try-ons.

These initiatives follow Alibaba’s commitment to invest $53 billion over the next three years into its cloud computing and AI infrastructure, signaling a robust dedication to advancing its AI capabilities and maintaining its position as a leading global cloud provider.

Yuan concluded by stating that as cloud solutions and AI become critical for global development, Alibaba Cloud is keen to evolve its offerings to meet customer needs.
