Rivian Strengthens AI Focus: Cohere’s CEO Joins Board of Directors
Aidan Gomez, the co-founder and CEO of generative AI startup Cohere, has been appointed to the board of Rivian, an electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer. This appointment, revealed in a regulatory filing, signals Rivian’s commitment to integrating artificial intelligence (AI) into its operations, aiming to position itself as a software-oriented leader in the automotive space.
Rivian expanded its board to include Gomez, whose term will expire in 2026. With a strong background as a data scientist and AI expert, Gomez co-founded Cohere in 2019, focusing on training AI foundation models for enterprise applications. The startup has secured partnerships with notable companies like Oracle and Notion.
Before founding Cohere, Gomez worked as a researcher at Google Brain, where he was part of a team led by Nobel Prize winner Geoffrey Hinton. He is also recognized for co-authoring the pivotal paper "Attention Is All You Need," which laid critical groundwork for many modern generative AI models.
Gomez’s skills may prove vital for Rivian as it collaborates with Volkswagen Group on a $5.8 billion joint venture aimed at software development. This partnership will allow Rivian to share its expertise in electrical architecture and potentially license technology to other companies in the future.
Additionally, Rivian has been developing an AI assistant for its vehicles, a project separate from the Volkswagen collaboration, as noted by its chief software officer, Wassym Bensaid.
RJ Scaringe, Rivian’s founder and CEO, expressed confidence in Gomez’s ability to drive innovation, stating that his expertise will bolster Rivian’s efforts to incorporate new technologies into its products, services, and manufacturing processes.
