Google’s DeepMind UK Team Takes Steps Toward Unionization: What It Means for Workers

Around 300 employees from Google’s AI-focused DeepMind team in London are reportedly looking to unionize under the Communication Workers Union. This move comes amid dissatisfaction with Google’s decision to eliminate a commitment not to utilize AI for military applications or surveillance, which previously appeared on their website. There is also growing concern regarding Google’s collaborations with the Israeli military, including a controversial $1.2 billion cloud computing contract that has spurred protests within the company.
Sources indicate that some DeepMind employees feel misled by these developments, with at least five staff members resigning over these issues. DeepMind’s workforce in the UK numbers around 2,000 individuals, suggesting a sizable portion is troubled by these changes.
A spokesperson for Google stated that the company promotes “constructive and open dialogue” with its employees. Previously, a smaller group of around 200 employees from Google and its parent company, Alphabet, announced their intention to unionize, but they represent only a fraction of the overall workforce and lack the capacity for collective bargaining.
