Welcome to Chat Haus: Your Go-To Coworking Space for AI Chatbots!

Nestled between an elementary school and a public library in Brooklyn’s Greenpoint neighborhood is a unique coworking space called Chat Haus. This unconventional space features many elements of a traditional office—people typing on keyboards, taking phone calls, and sipping coffee—but with a quirky twist: everything, including the “workers,” is made of cardboard.

Chat Haus is the brainchild of artist Nim Ben-Reuven, who designed it as an art exhibit. The exhibit showcases cardboard robots that mimic human activities at computers, controlled by small motors. The signage humorously offers desk space for a hefty price of $1,999 a month, branding it as "A luxury coworking space for chatbots."

Ben-Reuven created this exhibit as a response to his frustration with the growing reliance on AI for graphic design and videography, leading to lost freelance opportunities. He aims to bring humor to the situation, expressing that humor is a way for him to cope with the rapid changes in his industry. He prefers to keep the tone of the exhibit light and accessible, hoping to engage viewers of all ages.

As people gathered outside the display, reactions ranged from curiosity to amusement. A group of elementary school children posed questions, while millennials snapped pictures, illustrating the exhibit’s broad appeal. Ben-Reuven shared that, despite his concerns about AI’s impact on creatives, he sees the situation as less dire compared to larger world issues.

He has long used cardboard in his artwork, creating pieces like a lifesize airport terminal during grad school. Over the years, he meticulously constructed these cardboard robots, lovingly referred to as “cardboard babies.” This choice of material reflects his commentary on the transient nature of both his art and AI-generated content, which can appear elaborate but often lacks substance upon closer inspection.

The Chat Haus exhibit is temporary, as it awaits permits for the building’s renovation. Ben-Reuven hopes to keep it running at least until mid-May and is considering moving it to a larger gallery where he can expand upon the concept. He aims to craft a narrative that humorously critiques the relentless digital workspace driven by AI.

Currently, Chat Haus is on display in the front window of 121 Norman Avenue in Brooklyn, inviting both laughter and contemplation about the future of work in an AI-driven world.
