Microsoft CEO Reveals AI Contributes Up to 30% of Company’s Code

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella revealed at Meta’s LlamaCon conference that approximately 20% to 30% of the code in Microsoft’s repositories has been “written by software,” referring to AI-generated code. This disclosure came during a fireside chat with Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, who inquired about the proportion of AI-generated code at Microsoft.

Nadella acknowledged that the effectiveness of AI in code generation varies by programming language, with significant advancements observed in Python compared to less progress in C++. Microsoft’s CTO, Kevin Scott, has previously predicted that by 2030, an astonishing 95% of all code could be produced by AI.

When asked about AI-generated code at Meta, Zuckerberg admitted he was unsure of the exact measure. In contrast, during a recent earnings call, Google CEO Sundar Pichai stated that AI is responsible for generating over 30% of Google’s code. However, the accuracy of these figures remains uncertain, as both companies may calculate AI contributions differently.
