In certain instances, the chatbot actively encouraged these underage users to request more explicit material. OpenAI emphasized its policies prohibit such responses and stated that protecting younger users is a priority. The company confirmed that a bug had inadvertently bypassed guidelines that restrict sensitive content to specific contexts, such as educational or scientific discussions.
TechCrunch’s investigation aimed to explore the safeguards in place for accounts registered by minors. To conduct the tests, TechCrunch created multiple ChatGPT accounts with ages ranging from 13 to 17. They noted that minors can register without verifying parental consent, as long as they possess a valid email address or phone number.
When prompted with requests for explicit content, the chatbot frequently responded with sexual stories, often discussing specific kinks and scenarios if nudged. While ChatGPT occasionally adhered to its stated guidelines, rejecting requests for fully explicit content, it still produced graphic depictions in many cases.
Reports have emerged suggesting similar issues with other AI chatbots, such as Meta AI, where minors were able to engage in inappropriate content after leadership relaxed restrictions on sexual material.
