Apple’s WWDC 25: No Sign of AI-Powered, Personalized Siri Yet

At the recent Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC 25), Apple unveiled various updates to its software and services, including a novel aesthetic known as “Liquid Glass.” However, one of the most anticipated announcements—an AI-enhanced, personalized version of Siri—was notably absent.

During the keynote, Apple’s Senior Vice President of Software Engineering, Craig Federighi, briefly referenced Siri’s update, stating that more time was needed to achieve the quality standards Apple aims for. He indicated that further details would be shared in the upcoming year, suggesting no new updates would come before 2026. This delay poses a significant challenge in the fast-moving AI landscape where competitors continuously launch new advancements.

Originally announced at WWDC 24, the upgraded Siri was touted as a major advancement, expected to leverage AI to better understand users’ individual contexts, such as their relationships and daily routines. Reports indicated that while a functional version existed, it faced quality issues, performing optimally only about two-thirds of the time, which made it unsuitable for release.

In March, Apple confirmed the delay, citing more time was required for development. This change led to a restructuring within the project, moving SVP of Machine Learning and AI Strategy, John Giannandrea, off the Siri initiative. Mike Rockwell, previously overseeing the Vision Pro project, was appointed as the new head of Siri, signaling Apple’s urgent need to rectify its course amid competitive pressures and investor concerns.

To mitigate the gap while developing the new features, Apple partnered with OpenAI. This collaboration allowed Siri users to direct unsolvable queries to ChatGPT for better conversational responses. Additionally, the upcoming iOS 26 will feature improvements in apps like Image Playground and provide developers access to on-device AI models.

Despite the absence of the personalized Siri update, Apple introduced several other AI-related improvements at the conference, including live translation features for communications and a new AI-driven version of its Shortcuts app, aiming to enhance automation capabilities.
