OpenAI Withdraws Jony Ive Deal Promotions Following Court Order
OpenAI has removed a widely-discussed video that highlighted the relationship between its CEO, Sam Altman, and renowned Apple designer, Jony Ive. This video also touched upon OpenAI’s proposed $6.5 billion acquisition of Ive and his device startup, io. Following a court order related to a trademark dispute involving the name "io," all related promotional material has been taken down from both OpenAI’s website and YouTube channel.
Despite speculation regarding the stability of the acquisition, reports indicate that the deal is still intact. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman noted that the legal action stems from a restraining order issued against the use of the "io" name, not from issues with the acquisition itself. OpenAI confirmed this to be the case, stating, “This page is temporarily down due to a court order following a trademark complaint from iyO about our use of the name ‘io.’ We don’t agree with the complaint and are reviewing our options.”
The iyO company in question is part of Alphabet’s X “moonshot factory” and specializes in AI-powered products, including a new set of earbuds. There have been earlier reports of a trademark lawsuit by iyO against OpenAI. The judge overseeing the case has expressed concern that OpenAI’s promotional activities could confuse consumers regarding brand identity.
