Windsurf’s CEO Joins Google as OpenAI’s Acquisition Plans Crumble

OpenAI’s plans to acquire the trending AI startup Windsurf for $3 billion have unexpectedly fallen apart, as reported by The Verge. In a surprising turn of events, Windsurf CEO Varun Mohan and co-founder Douglas Chen, along with several top researchers, are set to join Google DeepMind.
A Google spokesperson, Chris Pappas, expressed excitement over the addition of Windsurf’s talent, emphasizing their commitment to advancing AI coding capabilities. Despite this significant talent acquisition, Google will not gain any ownership or control over Windsurf; instead, they will obtain a nonexclusive license to some of Windsurf’s technologies, allowing the startup to continue offering its innovations to other companies.
This hiring move is characteristic of a trend in the tech industry known as reverse-acquihires, where major firms secure top talent from startups while maintaining the startup’s independence. Notably, this is not the first time Google has opted for this approach, having previously recruited high-profile individuals from other AI firms.
In light of Mohan and Chen’s departure, Jeff Wang, Windsurf’s head of business, has been appointed as the interim CEO. The majority of Windsurf’s staff, approximately 250 employees, will retain their roles and continue developing AI coding tools for enterprise clients.
The failed acquisition has surfaced amidst ongoing tensions between OpenAI and Microsoft regarding contract negotiations. Specifically, Microsoft, an existing backer of OpenAI, sought to gain access to Windsurf’s coding technology through the acquisition, which may have prompted OpenAI’s decision to step back.
Earlier reports indicated that the exclusivity period for OpenAI’s offer had expired, giving Windsurf the freedom to pursue other opportunities—a move they wasted no time in making. The company had recently seen impressive growth, with an annual recurring revenue of around $100 million, attracting interest from significant players like OpenAI and Google.
As Windsurf navigates this new chapter, the potential impact on its momentum remains uncertain. Other AI startups that have lost leadership to larger firms have struggled to maintain their continuity, leaving Windsurf’s future outlook questionable.
