Intel Scales Back: A Closer Look at Its Manufacturing Project Reductions

Intel is continuing to scale back its manufacturing initiatives under the leadership of CEO Lip-Bu Tan, who has shared plans to eliminate inefficiencies within the company. Recent revelations from Intel’s second-quarter earnings report indicate that multiple manufacturing projects, particularly in Europe, will be canceled or delayed.

The company will halt development on previously announced factories in Germany and Poland, which include an assembly and testing facility in Poland and a chip manufacturing plant in Germany. These projects have been on pause since their initial suspension in 2024.

Additionally, Intel is consolidating its test operations currently located in Costa Rica, shifting them to Vietnam and Malaysia for greater efficiency. Tan expressed concern over the past investments, stating that capacity expansions were made prematurely and lacked alignment with actual demand. Moving forward, he emphasized the necessity to align capacity investments strictly with firm commitments and measurable milestones.

Moreover, Intel has postponed the opening of its significant $28 billion chip factory in Ohio for a second time, a facility that had been originally slated to commence operations in 2025 and was first delayed in February.

Tan’s current tenure began in March, following his appointment as CEO, wherein he aims to refine Intel’s organizational structure and operations. The company has undergone considerable workforce reductions, cutting approximately 15%, and plans to conclude the year with about 75,000 employees. These layoffs notably streamlined management layers and targeted the Intel Foundry unit responsible for external chip manufacturing.
