Meta Appoints Shengjia Zhao as Chief Scientist for AI Superintelligence Unit
Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has announced that Shengjia Zhao, a former researcher at OpenAI known for his contributions to major AI advancements like ChatGPT and GPT-4, will take on the role of Chief Scientist at the newly established Meta Superintelligence Labs (MSL). Zhao has been instrumental in forming this unit and has served as a leading scientist since its inception.
Zuckerberg shared the news via a post on Threads, stating that Zhao’s official appointment comes as MSL continues to enhance its recruitment efforts. Alongside Zhao, Alexandr Wang, ex-CEO of Scale AI, will head the new lab, which aims to focus on developing advanced AI models, particularly in areas related to reasoning.
Zhao’s pioneering work, including contributions to OpenAI’s AI reasoning model, dubbed o1, is expected to guide MSL’s scientific direction. His recruitment follows that of three other prominent researchers from OpenAI and additional experts from leading AI organizations such as Google DeepMind and Apple, signaling Meta’s commitment to building a robust AI research team.
In preparation for launching competitive AI projects, Meta has significantly invested in cloud computing infrastructure, with plans for a 1 gigawatt cloud computing cluster, Prometheus, by 2026. This installation will be among the most powerful, enabling extensive training runs essential for cutting-edge AI model development.
The formation of MSL now places Meta in a strategically advantageous position in the competitive landscape against industry heavyweights like OpenAI and Google, especially with its dual leadership structure that includes both Zhao and Yann LeCun from Meta’s Fundamental AI Research (FAIR) lab.
