VMware Embraces AI While Focusing on Sustainable Long-Term Growth

Broadcom recently announced at the VMware Explore conference that its VMware Cloud Foundation platform is now AI-native. This initiative aims to align VMware with the industry’s swift adoption of large language models, particularly as it faces significant scrutiny regarding its licensing policies since acquiring VMware in late 2023.

The company has come under fire for discontinuing its free tier, employing aggressive sales tactics, and deals with numerous court cases related to existing licensing agreements, including ongoing disputes over perpetual licenses. Consequently, many VMware users are reconsidering their reliance on the platform, looking instead to alternatives such as Nutanix, SUSE, and IBM.

Transitioning away from VMware, however, is not straightforward. The complexity associated with VMware’s deployment in heavily virtualized environments implies high migration costs and risks related to service quality metrics. Often, organizations opt to remain with VMware, embracing the familiar, despite the frustrating licensing fees and conditions.

Integrating AI into VMware’s existing offerings presents its own set of challenges. The company plans to embed AI deep into its architecture, which risks impacting current customer workloads with breaking changes that could compromise performance.

Broadcom’s immediate objective is to facilitate the deployment of AI models within existing VMware environments. The VMware Private AI Services, set to launch with VCF 9 subscriptions next year, will equip users with various tools for on-premise AI deployment. This features a model store (likely populated with open-source models), indexing services, vector databases, and a robust API gateway for inter-communication among AI models.

Conference attendees emphasized the growing significance of AI in enterprise settings, making it essential for every VMware infrastructure to incorporate AI capabilities. Nevertheless, Broadcom’s strategy appears to lack innovation, offering merely an entry-level acknowledgment of the need for AI.

Additionally, VMware announced enhancements to its Tanzu Platform, facilitating easier publishing of MCP servers and introducing a new data lakehouse, Tanzu Data Intelligence. A notable feature introduced is Intelligent Assist for VCF, an AI-powered chatbot that aims to reduce the time users spend waiting for human support by providing quicker responses based on VMware’s knowledge base.

Despite earlier predictions heralding the decline of traditional virtualization due to the rise of containerization and cloud applications, many enterprises continue to cling to their legacy infrastructure. VMware is aware that its long-term profitability is sustained by this entrenched legacy, despite the current hype surrounding AI integration.
