John Carreyrou and Co-Authors File Lawsuit Against Six Major AI Companies
A group of authors, led by John Carreyrou—who is known for exposing the Theranos scandal—has initiated a lawsuit against six major AI companies: Anthropic, Google, OpenAI, Meta, xAI, and Perplexity. The lawsuit accuses these companies of training their AI models on pirated versions of the authors’ books without permission.
This lawsuit follows a previous class action against Anthropic that alleged similar copyright violations. In that case, a judge ruled that while AI firms could utilize pirated content for training, the act of pirating is illegal.
Despite the $1.5 billion settlement offered to authors affected by Anthropic’s actions, many writers felt that this was insufficient. They argued that the settlement failed to hold AI companies accountable for the initial piracy, which had facilitated the generation of substantial revenue through the unauthorized use of their works.
The new lawsuit expresses concern that the settlement predominantly benefits the AI companies rather than the authors. The plaintiffs argue, “LLM companies should not be able to so easily extinguish thousands upon thousands of high-value claims at bargain-basement rates,” emphasizing that the consequences of their infringement should reflect the true extent of their actions.
