Anthropic Expands Horizons: Acquires AI Startup Vercept Following Meta’s Founder Acquisition
Anthropic has announced its acquisition of Vercept, a Seattle-based AI startup known for developing tools that automate complex tasks using AI agents. This acquisition comes shortly after Anthropic previously acquired another AI company, Bun, to enhance its coding capabilities for its product Claude Code.
Vercept was recognized for its innovative product, Vy, which functions as a computer-use agent in the cloud that could efficiently operate an Apple MacBook remotely. The startup was part of Seattle’s AI-focused incubator, A12, and boasts a strong network tied to the renowned Allen Institute for AI. Its co-founders, including Matt Deitke, have been at the forefront of AI research, with Deitke recently making headlines for securing a significant salary to join Meta’s Superintelligence Lab.
Despite the promising technology and a robust funding history—having raised a total of $50 million with notable investors, including former Google CEO Eric Schmidt—Vercept will be discontinuing its product on March 25 as it transitions under Anthropic’s umbrella.
The team joining Anthropic includes co-founders Kiana Ehsani, Luca Weihs, and Ross Girshick, though not every co-founder will be part of the new integration. Oren Etzioni, a founding leader of the Allen Institute for AI and Vercept co-founder, expressed disappointment at the closure, stating that the startup had made significant strides in just over a year.
The acquisition highlights a larger trend within the AI industry, where competition for innovative AI solutions is fierce. While the financial terms of the deal were not disclosed, there’s an acknowledgment of the high stakes involved in securing leading AI talent in a rapidly evolving market. Ehsani emphasized the decision to join Anthropic was fueled by the potential for accelerated growth and the opportunity to unite their vision with a larger team.
