Anthropic Announces Additional Fees for OpenClaw Usage for Claude Code Subscribers
Anthropic has announced that subscribers to its Claude Code service will need to pay additional fees for using third-party tools such as OpenClaw. This change, effective from noon Pacific on April 4, requires users to pay for extra usage that will not count against their existing subscription limits.
According to a customer email posted on Hacker News, Anthropic specified that this new pay-as-you-go system applies to all third-party harnesses. The move is described as a necessary step due to the company’s reliance on existing subscriptions not aligning with the usage patterns of these external tools.
Boris Cherny, head of Claude Code at Anthropic, affirmed on X that the company is being intentional in managing its growth to ensure sustainable long-term service for its customers. He acknowledged that while they currently apply these changes to OpenClaw, plans exist to extend this policy further.
This decision follows the move by OpenClaw’s creator, Peter Steinberger, who joined Anthropic’s competitor, OpenAI, with the intention of continuing OpenClaw as an open source project. Steinberger criticized Anthropic for restricting access, suggesting it was instead a strategy to solidify their proprietary offerings.
In the wake of these developments, Anthropic continues to offer full refunds for subscribers who may have misunderstood the policy regarding third-party tool integrations. They aim to clarify this shift to enhance user understanding.
