Mark Zuckerberg Conveys Disappointment in AI Agent Progress to Staff
During a recent internal town hall, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg expressed concerns about the slower-than-expected progress in the development of AI agents at the company. This remark came amid significant organizational changes, including layoffs and the reassignment of many employees to AI-focused teams. Earlier this year, Meta laid off approximately 10% of its workforce, amounting to around 8,000 jobs, while another 7,000 were shifted to different AI groups, including one named Agent Transformation.
Zuckerberg indicated that the job cuts had not been executed as cleanly as desired. He noted that the rapid adaptation to the evolving tech landscape was a primary concern for executives, compelling the company to make such drastic staffing changes. Although he acknowledged that the anticipated benefits from the new AI-centric structure have not yet materialized, he remains optimistic about seeing improvements in AI investment within the next three to six months.
Despite substantial investments in AI—projected to reach $145 billion in infrastructure this year—Meta’s AI unit has faced criticism from insiders. Reports describe the environment within this new team as challenging, with engineers characterizing it as a “soul-crushing gulag.”
