Nous Research in Talks for New Funding, Eyeing a $1.5B Valuation for Hermes Agent Development
Nous Research, the company behind the open-source Hermes agent, is reportedly close to securing a new funding round led by Robot Ventures, with notable contributions from USV and other prominent investors, valuing the company at $1.5 billion. Sources indicate that they aim to raise at least $75 million, and investor interest has been high. This funding round follows the company’s recent $50 million Series A raise.
Founded in 2023 by Jeffrey Quesnelle, Karan Malhotra, Ryan Teknium, and Shivani Mitra, Nous Research has previously garnered $70 million from various investors, including Paradigm and North Island Ventures, according to Crunchbase.
In addition to developing Hermes, the startup also operates a decentralized network that supplies hardware for computation and training. They have launched language models aimed at coding and mathematics.
After the viral success of Openclaw’s agent, Nous Research released Hermes as a competitive alternative. Unlike Openclaw, which operates locally on a PC, Hermes comes equipped with built-in skills for web searching, coding, and image understanding, and it has the capability to autonomously learn and adapt over time.
Hermes users can automate tasks and interact with the agent through messaging platforms like Telegram and Discord, enhancing the appeal of AI systems that can operate continuously in the background.
As an open-source platform with wide adoption, Hermes has gained a substantial following on GitHub, amassing around 214,000 stars and nearly 40,000 forks. Developers can run Hermes on their desktops or virtual private servers, but a cloud-hosted version is also available, catering to users who prefer an easier setup for a subscription fee ranging from $20 to $200 per month.
The anticipated new funding is expected to bolster the expansion of Hermes’ product offerings and business model.
