AMD Unveils Helios: A Game-Changer in AI with Its New Rack-Scale System Against Nvidia
Chipmaker AMD is stepping up its competition with Nvidia by introducing its Helios AI rack-scale system, aimed at catering to the computing needs of major AI labs. During the Advancing AI conference in San Francisco, AMD’s Chair and CEO, Dr. Lisa Su, highlighted the capabilities of this new system, which is set to ship later this year. Helios is touted as the "highest-performance AI rack" in the industry, specifically designed for scaling the training and operation of complex AI models.
Rack systems like Helios consolidate numerous processors into a single high-capacity unit, ideal for data centers running intensive AI workloads. Su emphasized that this platform is optimized for massive scale deployments by leading AI organizations. The performance metrics released indicate that Helios could outshine Nvidia’s established systems, which have dominated the market thus far.
Helios, unveiled in 2025, is already attracting interest from notable clients, including Microsoft, OpenAI, and Meta. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella announced plans to enhance Azure’s infrastructure with Helios, while AMD also formed a partnership with Anthropic to deploy significant amounts of GPUs via the new system.
In addition to Helios, AMD revealed its Venice-X CPU, designed for high-computing workloads in data centers, set for release in 2027.
Su discussed the potential evolution of the semiconductor landscape, predicting that the AI accelerator market could reach approximately $1.4 trillion by 2030. She noted that the demand for AI-driven processing capabilities is accelerating, indicating that GPUs will be crucial in this growth, particularly as algorithms continue to evolve and require greater compute power.
