OpenAI’s Sam Altman Warns Against Going Public in 2026: A Cautious Approach to IPOs
OpenAI’s CEO Sam Altman has stated that going public in 2026 would be "ill-advised." Despite OpenAI’s confidential filing for an Initial Public Offering (IPO), Altman emphasized the company’s decision to delay this move until they are fully prepared and the timing in the market aligns with the context of their technology.
During a recent interview with Fortune editor Alyson Shontell, Altman addressed concerns about OpenAI’s IPO timeline amidst ongoing discussions about AI safety and the company’s recent challenges, including a hack linked to the OpenAI-HuggingFace intersection. When asked if they feel pressured to expedite their IPO plans, Altman responded firmly: “We’re not rushing into an IPO.” He indicated that the conditions of the current environment concerning AI safety made now an inappropriate moment for such a leap.
Further clarifying the IPO plans, Altman mentioned they will only go public when the business is ready, and when societal attitudes towards their technology are more stable. When probed about the likelihood of an IPO in 2026, he confirmed, "I would say not 2026, yeah. We’ve got a lot of stuff to do."
Originally, reports had suggested that OpenAI aimed for an IPO in the latter half of 2026, but given market fluctuations and the company’s internal challenges, it now appears they are leaning towards a public offering in 2027 instead.
