Replit CEO Says the Company Is No Longer Working With Anthropic
Replit CEO Amjad Masad says the AI coding platform has stopped working with Anthropic, citing cost, performance, and partnership considerations. He made the comments Thursday at TechCrunch Disrupt.
“I think ChatGPT is better now,” Masad said, referring to Replit’s internal benchmarks. He said the company’s own models, Sol and Astra, consistently perform better at building applications from scratch, and that Replit felt other options were a better fit for now.
Replit provides a browser-based platform for building and deploying software. Its partnership with Anthropic had brought Claude models into the platform, and the arrangement was previously credited with helping Replit grow its revenue.
However, people familiar with the partnership disputed Masad’s account, saying the relationship was still in place. Replit’s website, blog, and social posts also indicated that Anthropic models were being used recently. A late-September Replit blog post, for example, listed Claude Fable 5 and Claude Fable 5.1 among the models running in Replit Agent’s production environment.
Replit announced a partnership with OpenAI in August, but had not previously said that its work with Anthropic had ended.
Masad also discussed the company’s business growth. He said enterprise contracts accounted for about 2% of revenue last year and roughly 15% this year, while business-to-business sales now make up more than half of Replit’s revenue.
He added that deploying AI safely requires a reliable environment for agents, including orchestration, error recovery, security, sandboxing, networking, and identity and authorization systems.
