Meta Removes Language That Raised Concerns About Scraping and AI Training

Meta has removed language from its commercial terms that appeared to allow it to use content from business accounts’ websites to develop and train its AI models.
The updated terms had said Meta could use content from a business account’s domains, webpages, or URLs to “provide, develop, improve, research, train, and maintain the integrity of” its products and services. Legal experts told Nieman Lab the wording could potentially authorize Meta to scrape publishers’ websites and use the material for AI training.
Meta said the changes did not represent a shift in its web-crawling practices. After the language was removed, the company said it had clarified that the consolidated crawling terms applied only to its advertising and business products, adding that the change did not affect how Meta uses web crawlers.
