Anthropic Pledges 5% of Its Shares to Public Benefit Fund
Anthropic says it will dedicate 5% of its shares to a new “public benefit fund,” designed to support projects that serve the public good.
The fund will be a wholly owned entity within the company. Anthropic also said it could contribute another 2% of its shares for every 50% increase in the company’s value.
The company has suggested the fund could make large donations to nonprofits or distribute money directly to specific groups. It may also support research into how AI affects employment. Anthropic has already committed $200 million to studying AI’s economic effects, but says the fund could give it the flexibility to take bolder approaches as the technology advances.
The announcement comes amid growing public concern about the AI industry. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei has described the industry’s backlash as a “crisis of trust.”
Anthropic says it will share more details about the fund’s structure and governance in the coming months.
