Sam Altman Discusses ‘Bumpy’ GPT-5 Rollout, Reintroduces GPT-4, and Tackles the ‘Chart Crime’ Controversy

During a recent Reddit AMA, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman addressed user concerns regarding the rollout of the new GPT-5 model, noting that it has faced significant challenges. Many users criticized the model for performing worse than its predecessor, GPT-4o, and requested its return.
One notable issue discussed was the "chart crime," a humorous incident during the GPT-5 presentation where a misleading chart was displayed, causing much online mockery. Users also brought up how a new feature, a real-time router, which is designed to select the appropriate model based on the prompt, was malfunctioning. Altman explained that a server outage during the rollout negatively impacted the performance, giving users the impression that GPT-5 was less capable.
To address these issues, Altman expressed a commitment to improving functionality, including looking into allowing Plus subscribers to continue using GPT-4o. He also announced plans to double the rate limits for Plus users, enabling them to familiarize themselves with GPT-5 without worrying about hitting usage caps.
The session concluded with Altman assuring users that they would continue to stabilize the model based on user feedback.
