Tesla Shuts Down Dojo: The End of Musk’s AI Training Dream for Full Self-Driving?
Tesla has officially disbanded its Dojo supercomputer team, a significant step back in its ambition to develop in-house chips for autonomous driving. The news, reported by Bloomberg, reveals that Peter Bannon, the head of Dojo, is leaving the company, and the rest of the team members will be reassigned to other projects within Tesla.
This shakeup follows the departure of approximately 20 employees who have left to establish a new AI startup named DensityAI. This company plans to focus on building chips, hardware, and software intended for data centers that cater to robotics, AI agents, and automotive applications. DensityAI’s founding team includes former Dojo head Ganesh Venkataramanan and other ex-Tesla employees.
Tesla’s decision comes at a pivotal moment as CEO Elon Musk has been working to reshape the company’s image as an AI and robotics enterprise. Although there was a limited launch of its robotaxi service in Austin earlier this summer, the rollout suffered from numerous reported incidents involving poor driving behavior.
Musk had long touted Dojo as a cornerstone of Tesla’s AI strategy, claiming it was vital for processing immense volumes of video data necessary for full self-driving capabilities. The project was first announced during Tesla’s AI Day in 2021, where the company introduced its D1 chip, with plans for a next-gen D2 chip to resolve any bottlenecks present in the architecture.
In a shift towards external partnerships, sources reported that Tesla is expected to increase its reliance on third-party technology providers like Nvidia and AMD for computation needs. Additionally, Tesla recently signed a $16.5 billion deal with Samsung for the production of AI chips aimed at enhancing its full self-driving technology and robotic systems.
The winding down of Dojo is noteworthy, especially since Musk had previously indicated a potential doubling down on the project leading up to the company’s robotaxi unveiling. In contrast, discussions surrounding Dojo have significantly diminished since Musk shifted his focus to a new project, Cortex, being developed in Austin, designed to tackle real-world AI issues.
