Thinking Machines Lab, led by Mira Murati, recently showcased its plans to enhance AI models to achieve more consistent responses. This initiative follows the lab’s substantial seed funding of $2 billion and the recruitment of prominent former OpenAI researchers. In a blog post titled "Defeating Nondeterminism in LLM Inference," the lab explained how randomness often influences AI model outputs, leading to varied responses even to the same query.
The lab argues that current AI models can be viewed as non-deterministic systems, a challenge they believe can be tackled through their research. The core issue identified is the orchestration of GPU kernels—the software layers that manage the processing within Nvidia’s chips. By refining this orchestration, the lab aims to foster AI models that produce more reliable and predictable responses.
This pursuit not only aims to enhance the user experience for enterprises and researchers, but it could also streamline reinforcement learning (RL) training. Without consistent outputs, the dataset used for training AI loses clarity, complicating the RL process. A stable output would potentially lead to a more efficient training mechanism.
Murati, the former CTO of OpenAI, indicated that the lab’s first product is set to be revealed shortly, and it will cater to researchers and startups looking to develop tailored AI models.
