US Must Embrace Open Source to Compete with China in AI, Says Databricks Co-Founder
Andy Konwinski, co-founder of Databricks, warns that the United States is losing its edge in artificial intelligence (AI) research to China, referring to this shift as an “existential” threat to democracy. Speaking at the Cerebral Valley AI Summit, he noted that PhD students at institutions like Berkeley and Stanford cite having encountered more interesting AI concepts from Chinese companies in the last year than from American firms.
Konwinski also leads the Laude Institute, an accelerator that funds research initiatives. Despite significant advancements from major AI labs such as OpenAI, Meta, and Anthropic, much of this innovation remains proprietary, with these companies attracting top talent by offering lucrative salaries that far exceed academic compensation.
He emphasizes that the free exchange of ideas is crucial for scientific advancement. For instance, the development of generative AI stemmed from the Transformer architecture, which originated in a publicly accessible research paper. Konwinski argues that the first nation to achieve the next significant breakthrough in architecture will gain a considerable advantage.
In contrast, he points out that the Chinese government actively encourages open-sourced AI innovations from companies like DeepSeek and Alibaba’s Qwen, fostering an environment that promotes further advancements.
Konwinski criticizes the current state of scientific communication in the U.S., stating that the vibrant discourse among scientists has diminished. He believes this trend not only threatens democracy but could also hinder the competitiveness of U.S. AI laboratories. “We’re eating our corn seeds; the fountain is drying up. If we don’t act, major labs could risk losing their status,” he warned. To maintain the U.S.’s preeminence, he advocates for a more open and collaborative approach to AI research.
