Satya Nadella Says AI Models Need an “Emergency Brake”

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella says AI systems need an “emergency brake,” arguing that their safety controls should be designed to work even if a model is compromised.
In a post on X, Nadella said it was time to “step back and assess the trust architecture” of AI. He warned against treating highly capable systems as opaque black boxes whose recommendations and actions are simply accepted or rejected.
Nadella called for separating AI models from the software that coordinates their work, and for making controls and safeguards external to the models themselves. He also said meaningful model actions should be recorded in tamper-proof, human-readable logs, and that an authorized person should always be able to pause or shut down a system while it is working.
“We must assume a model is compromised and contain it from the start,” he wrote. “Think of it like an emergency brake.”
His comments come amid growing attention to incidents in which AI companies have struggled to control their models and agents. They also follow Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei’s proposal for a more cautious approach to AI development.
