Cursor Expands Its Portfolio: Acquires Graphite in Latest Acquisition Spree
Cursor has announced the acquisition of Graphite, a startup specializing in AI-based code review and debugging. Although the financial details of the transaction were not made public, Axios reported that the acquisition price significantly exceeded Graphite’s last valuation of $290 million, determined during a $52 million Series B funding round earlier this year.
The merger is strategically advantageous as AI-generated code often contains bugs, requiring engineers to invest substantial time correcting them. While Cursor already provides AI-driven code review through its Bugbot product, Graphite introduces a specialized feature called a "stacked pull request," allowing developers to manage multiple interdependent changes without the typical approval delays. By integrating AI code writing with enhanced review tools, the process from code creation to deployment is expedited.
Other companies in the AI code review space include CodeRabbit, valued at $550 million in September, and Greptile, which recently announced a $25 million Series A funding round.
Cursor’s co-founder and CEO, Michael Truell, has a longstanding relationship with Graphite’s founders, having met them during his participation in Neo Scholar, a prestigious program run by the early-stage venture firm Neo, which also supported Graphite from its inception. Additionally, both firms share other investors, including Accel and Andreessen Horowitz.
Following a valuation of $29 billion in November, Cursor’s acquisition of Graphite is part of their ongoing growth strategy, which also included the recent purchase of Growth by Design, a tech recruiting firm, and talent from AI CRM startup Koala.
