Anthropic Co-Founder Reveals Briefing to Trump Administration on Mythos

Jack Clark, co-founder and Head of Public Benefit at Anthropic, shared insights about the AI company’s engagement with the Trump administration regarding its advanced AI model, Mythos. In a recent interview at the Semafor World Economy summit, Clark confirmed that the company had briefed the administration on the model, which has been withheld from public release due to its potential cybersecurity capabilities.

The discussion comes on the heels of Anthropic filing a lawsuit against the Trump administration’s Department of Defense (DOD), which had categorized the company as a supply-chain risk. This designation raised concerns over the military’s access to its AI systems for various applications, including mass surveillance and autonomous weapons. Clark emphasized that the lawsuit should not overshadow the importance of national security and that partnerships between the government and private sectors are crucial for leveraging groundbreaking technologies.

Despite the DOD’s labeling of Anthropic, Clark referred to it as a "narrow contracting dispute." He reaffirmed the necessity for government awareness and collaboration on innovative technologies that intersect with national security interests. Clark mentioned ongoing conversations with Trump officials, including encouragement from them for banks to trial the Mythos model, which could potentially transform financial operations for institutions like JPMorgan Chase and Goldman Sachs.

Addressing broader societal impacts of AI during the summit, Clark reflected on concerns raised by Anthropic’s CEO, Dario Amodei, regarding potential unemployment levels associated with AI advancements. While Amodei warned of significant job displacement, Clark observed only minor employment shifts within certain industries, highlighting the company’s preparedness for any major transitions.

When asked about academic paths for students in the age of AI, Clark suggested pursuing majors that integrate diverse disciplines and foster analytical thinking. He argued that as AI evolves, understanding how to ask pertinent questions and synthesizing insights from various fields will be paramount for future professionals.
