In an interview with Bloomberg, Meredith Whittaker, President of Signal, made a clear statement regarding the nature of AI chatbots like ChatGPT and Claude. She emphasized that these tools should not be perceived as friends, describing them as neither conscious nor sentient beings. Whittaker pointed out, "These are not your friends. While she admitted to utilizing AI tools for tasks such as document formatting, she emphasized her commitment to preserving her own thinking and writing process. "I don’t ask them questions," she said, highlighting her desire to maintain autonomy in her exploration of ideas without relying on AI-generated responses.
Whittaker also addressed Microsoft AI CEO Mustafa Suleyman’s prediction that users might delegate their holiday shopping to Microsoft Copilot. She expressed concerns over such a scenario, noting that it would require the AI to access sensitive personal information across various services, including credit card details and private messages. Describing this extensive access as a potential "backdoor," she voiced her apprehension about compromising personal security.
