AWS and Bluesight Innovate AI Solutions for 340B Hospital Compliance

AWS (Amazon Web Services) recently highlighted how Bluesight developed Prism, an AI layer that enhances hospital pharmacy and compliance data integration across its product suite. Currently, the Prism Assistant for ControlCheck is operational across 20 health systems, while a multi-product agent aimed at ensuring compliance with 340B Group Purchasing Organization (GPO) regulations is expected to launch later in 2026.

The initiative addresses a resource-intensive process that pharmacy teams often manage manually. According to AWS, a single 340B-covered entity may spend over 4,000 hours annually determining if GPO drug purchases meet exception criteria. This process typically involves comparing purchase data with various regulatory sources including FDA shortage notices, inventory records, and machine learning forecasts.

ControlCheck’s Success in Health Systems

Bluesight’s initial focus was its ControlCheck product designed for monitoring controlled substances. It enables hospital diversion teams to identify unusual medication transaction patterns, albeit with a manual reporting process. The Prism Assistant enhances this by providing a conversational interface to query ControlCheck data, generate charts, and draft reports. The first version was built during a rapid three-day engagement with AWS engineers in September 2025.

To avoid direct database access, Bluesight wrapped ControlCheck’s API endpoints through AWS Lambda functions to format data suitable for agent processing. This design reduced query response times from five minutes to just ten seconds. The assistant was successfully launched within a virtual private cloud.

Future Developments for GPO Compliance

Federal 340B regulations prevent certain hospitals from utilizing GPO contracts for outpatient drugs unless no other options are available. Bluesight’s upcoming GPO agent will consolidate records from various sources including CostCheck for purchase data and ShortageCheck for drug availability.

This architecture is powered by advanced AI models for increased efficiency. While testing with synthetic data has yielded impressive results, actual deployment performance across hospitals will ultimately need careful monitoring due to variability in local data conditions.

Ensuring Compliance through Structured Processes

In the GPO framework, a deterministic scoring service will handle compliance evaluations based on multiple evidence inputs rather than relying solely on the AI model. This allows for a more transparent and repeatable compliance process.

AWS emphasizes that Bluesight’s implementation adheres to strict HIPAA protocols, utilizing Amazon’s services for secure data management. Monitoring tools such as Amazon CloudWatch are deployed to track decision-making processes and performance metrics, crucial for maintaining compliance integrity.

Overall, the integration of AI is set to drastically improve report generation and analysis speeds, with reported time reductions in routine processes growing as high as 97%. This evolution signals a significant advancement in hospital pharmacy operations, enabling quicker compliance checks and decision-making.
