SenseTime’s Galaxy Project: Scaling Up Domestic AI Chips for the Future

SenseTime has initiated the Galaxy Project to enhance domestic AI chip infrastructure in China through collaboration with nearly 20 partners. In a keynote address titled “Intelligent Transformation and Symbiosis,” co-founder Yang Fan outlined a comprehensive approach connecting chip-level technology with partnerships and commercial deployment, resulting in domestically-produced AI computing power.
As part of the Galaxy Project, SenseTime entered a cooperation with Guoxing Aerospace for space computing and established a research partnership with five institutions, including the Shanghai Artificial Intelligence Laboratory, focusing on scientific computing applications.

Yang highlighted three evolving trends: rising token demand across enterprises, increased industrial AI adoption, and advancements in domestic chip commercialization enabling rapid deployment of intelligent computing centers built on Chinese silicon.
However, SenseTime’s ambitious projections about its token processing capabilities—claiming an average of 2.42 trillion tokens daily and expecting growth to 10 trillion by Q4 2026—remain unverified by independent sources, and enterprise buyers should approach these figures cautiously.
Efficiency and Adaptability Metrics
SenseTime asserts that its technology increases utilization of Model FLOPs on mainstream domestic chips by 85–152%. Nonetheless, these claims lack third-party validation. The company’s assertion of delivering cost-effective hybrid inference technology compared to Nvidia’s offerings demands greater scrutiny, given the absence of external benchmarking to affirm its performance metrics.
Domestic AI chips historically encounter obstacles due to fragmented software architectures. Additionally, SenseTime introduced “Tokens Per Watt,” a new metric for AI data center efficiency, and claimed significant improvements in efficiency, predicting energy savings and enhancements in computing load prediction. The Galaxy Project encompasses an impressive array of partners, including domestic chip manufacturers and infrastructure firms, aiming to build one major “token factory” and several computing clusters while supporting around 200 AI startups. Yang emphasized that domestic production is a collective effort across China’s innovation landscape, stressing the importance of cooperation in this evolution.
Long-Term Technological Ventures
Looking towards the future, SenseTime is exploring optical computing to enhance data center efficiency and quantum computing for AI optimization. The collaboration with Guoxing Aerospace aims to develop the SenseTime Space Computing Constellation, targeting a satellite launch in 2026 with the aim of deploying thousands of satellites and achieving substantial computing capacity by 2030.
Physical Infrastructure Developments
On an operational level, SenseTime has established Shanghai’s first 5A-rated intelligent computing center, further expanding capacity to handle over 20 trillion tokens daily across multiple industries. The company is also in the process of developing the largest domestic intelligent computing center in Hong Kong, with plans for a significant overseas computing base in Saudi Arabia.
