Mecka AI is approaching a significant milestone, targeting a valuation of around $500 million as it secures a new funding round led by Sequoia Capital. This comes just three months after the startup raised $60 million, highlighted by ventures from Framework Ventures, Menlo Ventures, SV Angel, and Kindred Ventures.

While the exact figures for this upcoming financing round have yet to be finalized, insiders indicate a strong likelihood of its occurrence. Mecka AI did not respond to inquiries for further comment, and Sequoia Capital has chosen to remain tight-lipped about the details.

Founded in 2024 by Josh Gao, Mogen Cheng, Jason Chong, and Duy Nguyen, Mecka AI originated as a response to the critical absence of real-world data necessary for training humanoid and general-purpose robots. The team, lacking traditional robotics backgrounds, identified the challenge of capturing physical interactions as a primary limitation in the field.

The startup’s name is inspired by "mecha," denoting the large, fictional robots operated by humans. Reflecting their mission, Mecka AI aims to bring the advancements in data collection seen in AI training to robotics. They pay individuals to document everyday activities using body sensors and smartphones, thus creating valuable datasets.

According to Gao, Mecka AI is projecting a $100 million annual run rate by the end of 2026, a goal he discussed earlier this year when announcing their previous fundraising round.

While the customer list remains undisclosed, numerous robotics companies and AI laboratories are turning to Mecka’s "egocentric" data approach alongside other physical data collection methods. The landscape for similar startups includes XDOF, which is reportedly in a funding round valued at $1.2 billion, as well as human-data platforms like Scale AI and Micro1 that are extending their reach beyond traditional applications.
