A Day in the Life: Inside Elizabeth Holmes’ Desk – A Look at the Mind Behind Theranos
With the backdrop of the United States v. Elizabeth Holmes trial, a new website has emerged that allows users to experience the world of Theranos’ former CEO firsthand. Created by Extend engineer Bo Lau, this interactive platform invites visitors to "virtually" sit at Elizabeth Holmes’ desk and explore an environment filled with authentic documents and communications from the trial.
Using over a thousand emails, texts, slides, and other records made public during the legal proceedings, Lau’s website immerses users in the era of Theranos, taking them back to 2016—a time when iPhones had home buttons and MacBooks were running OS X El Capitan. Users can interact with the setup, accessing Holmes’ iPhone and laptop to browse through the extensive legal documents.
The simulation not only serves as a form of entertainment but also presents an innovative way to navigate the convoluted history of one of tech’s most infamous cases. This user-friendly design makes it far easier than sourcing through thousands of PDFs on court websites for key information.
In addition to merely creating the experience, Lau is using the website to promote a watch party for an upcoming documentary titled You Can See Everything about Holmes. Furthermore, the site promotes Lau’s own company, Extend, which specializes in document processing technology, claiming to be capable of parsing and extracting data with unmatched accuracy.
Overall, this project provides a unique blend of education and amusement, shedding light on Theranos’ complex saga while drawing users into the digital realm of one of Silicon Valley’s most notorious figures.
