Google’s long-standing supremacy in the search engine arena may soon be challenged as OpenAI, boosted by its partnership with Microsoft, is reportedly stepping up to launch its own AI-driven search product.

According to two sources familiar with the matter who spoke to Reuters, OpenAI is scheduled to unveil its AI-powered search tool on Monday. The introduction of this product coincides closely with the timing of Google’s annual I/O conference, which starts on Tuesday and is anticipated to feature several AI-related announcements.

While Google remains a titan in search, it too has been adapting to incorporate AI more deeply into its functionalities. Google began trialling AI-powered search summaries in the US over a year ago and expanded testing to signed-in UK users last month.

OpenAI’s possible entry into the search engine sector could pose a challenge not only to Google, but also to other companies such as Perplexity.

OpenAI, which receives substantial backing from Microsoft, appears to be capitalizing on the convergence of AI and search engine technology to establish its own market niche. Microsoft previously incorporated OpenAI’s AI technologies into its Bing search engine and Edge browser in Feb 2023. This provided premium subscribers with access these sophisticated features, as well as enabling their integration into the Microsoft Office suite.

It is anticipated that OpenAI’s upcoming search product will build upon its current flagship tool, ChatGPT. According to Bloomberg, the new feature is likely to allow users to ask questions to ChatGPT and obtain answers that extract information from the internet with suitable attributions. This might include references to Wikipedia or various blogs and may even provide relevant images or diagrams in response to queries.

The successful launch of this new search product by OpenAI could indicate a significant change in the manner internet searches are performed, veering away from traditional search models towards more integrated, AI-driven responses that greatly improve user experience.
