Factiverse: The Norwegian Startup Combatting Disinformation with AI Technology

In the aftermath of the U.S. 2024 presidential election, it became evident that disinformation spread online at an alarming rate, influencing public opinions on candidates and key issues such as public health, climate change, and immigration. This rise in misleading information has been exacerbated by generative AI technology, which can create deepfakes and unreliable narratives in moments.

To combat this issue, Norwegian startup Factiverse has emerged with a solution. Participating in the TechCrunch Disrupt Battlefield 200, they won best pitch in the Security, Privacy, and Social Networking category. Factiverse has developed a business-to-business tool for live fact-checking of text, video, and audio, aiming to save organizations time on research and reduce reputational and legal risks.

Founded in 2020, Factiverse has raised around $1.45 million in pre-seed funding. Despite its early stage, it has begun collaboration with various media and financial organizations, including one of Norway’s largest banks. The startup provided live fact-checking for the U.S. presidential debates, working alongside multiple media partners.

CEO and co-founder Maria Amelie explains that Factiverse isn’t based on large language models but instead uses a unique model grounded in information retrieval. Amelie, a former technology journalist, and Vinay Setty, the CTO, who has a background in machine learning, have tailored the model to rely on credible and well-curated data from verified sources globally, steering clear of unreliable information that generative AI often consumes.

Unlike conventional search engines, Factiverse’s system identifies claims and conducts real-time searches across various platforms, including academic resources. It curates the most credible sources related to a user’s query, analyzing the context and citations within articles to provide reliable information.

Currently, Factiverse asserts it exceeds the performance of several large models, achieving an 80% accuracy rate in identifying fact-check worthy claims across 114 languages. Looking ahead, the company aims to enhance its model further and plans to seek additional seed funding in 2025, inviting investors focused on fostering reliability and trust in information.
