Concerns Rise Over AI Benchmarking Organization’s Delayed Disclosure of OpenAI Funding
An AI benchmarking organization has come under fire for its lack of transparency regarding funding from OpenAI, leading to allegations of impropriety within the AI community. The nonprofit, Epoch AI, which primarily receives funding from Open Philanthropy, disclosed on December 20 that OpenAI had supported its development of FrontierMath—a series of advanced tests designed to evaluate AI mathematical capabilities. This information was revealed as OpenAI prepared to showcase its new AI model, o3.
Contractors involved in creating FrontierMath noted that they were not informed of OpenAI’s involvement until the announcement was made public. One contributor, identified as “Meemi” on the forum LessWrong, emphasized that there should have been clearer communication about the funding from OpenAI. Many in the community raised concerns on social media about how this lack of disclosure could undermine FrontierMath’s credibility.
In response to the criticism, Tamay Besiroglu, associate director of Epoch AI, acknowledged the organization’s failure to be transparent. He explained that they were bound by contractual limitations regarding the disclosure of the partnership until the launch of o3. However, he admitted that the organization should have prioritized transparency with contributors from the beginning. Besiroglu emphasized that while OpenAI has access to FrontierMath, they have a verbal agreement preventing its use for training AI, addressing concerns about potential bias in benchmarking.
Despite this assurance, Ellot Glazer, Epoch AI’s lead mathematician, stated they have not yet been able to independently verify OpenAI’s results with FrontierMath. He expressed confidence that OpenAI’s score is likely legitimate but underscored the need for thorough independent evaluation before drawing conclusions.
This situation highlights ongoing challenges in establishing trustworthy benchmarks for AI and securing funding while preventing conflicts of interest.
