Chinese Tech Giant Cuts AI Costs with Homegrown Chips: A Game Changer for the Industry
Earlier this year, speculation surrounding DeepSeek briefly caused a crash in Nvidia’s stock, suggesting that their models require significantly fewer chips than previously thought. Following this, Chinese fintech giant Ant Group, backed by Alibaba founder Jack Ma, announced a significant breakthrough in AI technology.
According to reports, Ant Group successfully utilized Chinese-made chips from Alibaba and Huawei, achieving a 20% reduction in AI training costs. This was highlighted in an article by Bloomberg, which reported that the performance of these Chinese chips was comparable to that of Nvidia’s chips during testing phases at Ant Group.
Should these Chinese chips become widely adopted, they may challenge Nvidia’s dominant position in the AI chip market. Despite Nvidia maintaining a strong demand for their products, particularly in China where buyers are reportedly acquiring their latest Blackwell chips under U.S. export controls, the emergence of competitive alternatives could shift the landscape of AI hardware.
Ant Group and Nvidia have not yet responded to requests for comments on these developments.
