Unlocking Hidden Treasures: How Earth AI’s Algorithms Discovered Critical Minerals in Overlooked Locations
Last summer, mining startup KoBold captured attention by announcing the discovery of one of the largest copper deposits in over a decade in Zambia. Building on this momentum, Earth AI recently disclosed its own achievement: identifying promising deposits of critical minerals in parts of Australia that have been overlooked by other mining companies for decades. While it’s still undetermined if their findings match the size of KoBold’s discovery, it implies that future supplies of critical minerals may hinge on a combination of AI-analyzed field data.
Roman Teslyuk, founder and CEO of Earth AI, highlighted the distinction between geographical and technological frontiers in mining. Earth AI has pinpointed copper, cobalt, and gold deposits in the Northern Territory and silver, molybdenum, and tin at another location in New South Wales.
Earth AI stems from Teslyuk’s graduate studies in Sydney, where he learned of an unusual practice: mining companies are required to submit exploration data to a national archive, a resource that has been vastly underutilized. His idea was to create an algorithm capable of analyzing this wealth of historical data, allowing for improved predictions about mineral deposits.
Initially, Teslyuk’s approach focused on predictions to entice potential investors but faced skepticism. Mining is notoriously conservative, with a resistance to new technologies. To counter reluctance, Earth AI developed its own drilling apparatus to validate its software’s predictions. After joining Y Combinator in 2019, the company honed its hardware and software, raising $20 million in a Series B funding round in January.
Teslyuk emphasized that while Earth AI utilizes AI like KoBold, their methods differ significantly. Earth AI’s algorithms are designed to rapidly scan extensive areas, identifying mineral deposits that might be neglected by traditional exploration methods. This innovative approach aims to expedite the discovery process, which historically has taken decades, a pace that is unsustainable in today’s fast-moving world.
