Google’s Gemini Achieves Milestone by Completing Pokémon Blue

Google’s latest AI model, Gemini 2.5 Pro, has reportedly accomplished a significant milestone by finishing a 29-year-old video game, Pokémon Blue. This achievement was announced by Google CEO Sundar Pichai, who shared on X, "What a finish! Gemini 2.5 Pro just completed Pokémon Blue!"

The successful completion of Pokémon Blue came through a livestream titled "Gemini Plays Pokémon," created by Joel Z, a 30-year-old software engineer who is not affiliated with Google. Despite his independence, Google executives have been supportive of the project. Logan Kilpatrick, a product lead at Google AI Studio, highlighted Gemini’s progress previously, noting that it had earned the fifth badge in the game, while another model, Claude, only had three at that time.

This accomplishment raises questions about why Pokémon was chosen for the demonstration. Earlier this year, the AI company Anthropic showcased how its Claude AI model was advancing in playing Pokémon Red, citing its "extended thinking and agent training" as key advantages in managing unexpected tasks, such as playing classic video games.

Joel Z has made clear that while Gemini successfully completed the game, the performance should not be viewed as a benchmark for how well an AI can play Pokémon. He explained on his Twitch channel that both Gemini and Claude were aided by particular tools and methodologies—a crucial detail influencing their capabilities.

Both AI models utilized an "agent harness," a framework that provides them with pertinent game information, including screenshots and overlays, to facilitate decision-making in the game. Joel Z stated that while he made interventions to improve Gemini’s overall capabilities, he did not offer specific guidance or cheat codes, focusing instead on enhancing the model’s reasoning skills.
