Major Military AI Contracts Secured by Anthropic, OpenAI, Google, and xAI
The Pentagon has officially opened the military AI floodgates, awarding contracts totaling up to $800 million to four major players: Google, OpenAI, Anthropic, and Elon Musk’s xAI. Each of these companies can earn up to $200 million for their contributions.
Dr. Doug Matty, the Chief Digital and AI Officer, expressed that the integration of AI is revolutionizing the Department’s capability to assist its personnel and maintain a strategic edge over adversaries. However, past incidents with AI outputs have raised concerns. For instance, Grok previously generated controversial statements that made it difficult to trust such systems for sensitive applications. Erroneous AI responses in high-stakes environments such as national security could be unacceptable.
