India’s Ambitious Quantum Computing Initiative: Enter QpiAI

QpiAI, an Indian startup specializing in the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) and quantum computing for enterprise applications, has successfully secured $32 million in funding. This round was co-led by the Indian government’s National Quantum Mission and Avataar Ventures, raising QpiAI’s post-money valuation to approximately $162 million.

The National Quantum Mission, launched in 2023 with a budget of $750 million, aims to position India as a global leader in quantum computing. The initiative focuses on the development of intermediate-scale quantum computers featuring 50-1,000 physical qubits within eight years, alongside advancing satellite-based quantum communications, multi-node quantum networks, and various quantum materials.

Among the eight startups selected for initial grants under the National Quantum Mission, QpiAI stands out as it claims to have developed India’s first full-stack quantum computer, named QpiAI-Indus, which was introduced in April 2025 with 25 superconducting qubits.

Founded in 2019, QpiAI combines quantum computing and AI to optimize processes across multiple industries, including manufacturing, transportation, finance, and pharmaceuticals. The startup has designed its proprietary software and hardware to tackle real-world challenges in materials science and drug discovery.

QpiAI’s CEO, Nagendra Nagaraja, emphasized the significance of quantum computing in enhancing AI’s efficacy, particularly in simulation and drug synthesis. Looking ahead, QpiAI plans to launch a 64-qubit quantum computer in November 2025, with plans for manufacturing its quantum hardware locally beginning in 2026. Currently, the company assembles about 80% of its machines in-house and boasts a diverse team of 100 employees, including 25 PhDs.

The startup has experienced profitability at the EBITDA level for the past three years and is actively exploring entry into new markets such as Singapore and the Middle East, while also building a robust pipeline for a 100-logical qubit system by 2030.

In addition to its own initiatives, the National Quantum Mission is extending support to other startups like QNu Labs, Dimira Technologies, and Quanastra, promoting various advancements in quantum technologies across the nation.
