Waymo Halts San Francisco Robotaxi Service Amid Power Blackout Struggles
Waymo has halted its robotaxi service in San Francisco after a significant blackout led to many of its vehicles being stranded on the streets. The incident occurred on Saturday evening, causing a disruption that saw human drivers navigating around the immobilized robotaxis.
The company confirmed the suspension of its ride-hailing services due to the power outage, with spokesperson Suzanne Philion stating they are working closely with city officials to monitor the situation. They expressed hope for a quick return to service and thanked the public for their patience.
As the blackout affected both traffic lights and mass transit, San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie advised residents to avoid driving unless absolutely necessary. Speculation around the cause of the trouble for Waymo’s vehicles points to the loss of traffic signal functionality and possible disruptions in cell service or traffic data.
The blackout was reportedly triggered by a fire at a Pacific Gas & Electric substation, impacting around 120,000 customers. While most regained power by late Saturday, about 35,000 residents remained without electricity on Sunday morning.
Despite the current challenges, Waymo’s recent performance had indicated significant growth, boasting 450,000 robotaxi rides per week. The current disruption highlights the vulnerability of even advanced transportation systems to infrastructure failures.
